The May Revolution of 1810 gave birth to a new política life in the city of Buenos Aires, in which different members of the urban plebe took part. The plebe was a highly heterogeneous group that occupied the lowest step in the social stratification of the city. This article outlines the diverse aspects of that plebeian participation: its presence in the revolutionary celebrations, its mobilization by members of the elite to adjust conflicts inside it, its relationship with the Cabildo, the appearance uf military mutinies led by plebeians. Through these ways the participation of the urban plebe became a constitutive clement of the Buenos Aires' politics in the beginnings of the independent period.
