Abstract

This work analyzes Daniela Horovitz's musical interpretation of Sappho's poems, a performance that transposes Ancient Greek poetry into a Latin American key, with vernacular rhythms and melodies for a culturally proximal audience. This approach differs from traditional modes of Sapphic performance in a European context. Through this new, local perspective, the paper reveals the cultural value of interpreting Sappho’s poetry in such a manner, in terms of topicality and appropriation, and points out the new meanings that Horovitz’s performance adds to the Sapphic text.
