Abstract

This article follows contemporary Costa Rican theatre processes based on four cultural and historic factors: 1) The consolidation of efficient cultural policies during the 1970s; 2) The contributions to Costa Rican theatre by South American artists exiled in Costa Rica during the military dictatorships on the Southern Cone; 3) The participation of Costa Rican artists in foreign theatre graduate programs around the world starting in the 1970s, and 4) The incorporation of Costa Rica to international programs meant to support the performing arts. The article argues that at least three out of these four factors have potential for transculturation processes.
