Abstract

The essay examines the dramatic and scenic construction of Os Sertões, a series of performances based on Euclides da Cunha's book that was put on by Teatro Oficina, the renown company led by Brazilian director José Celso. The author's approach pays special attention to the vast field of sound, voice and music in association with the theatre architecture, the political aspect of the project and the conceptions of theatricality implicit in these stage performances.
